Gujarat - General Info

Gujarat, is one of India's most industrialized states, in western India, covering an area of 196,024 sq km (75,685 sq mi). It has a fertile plain land in the south cut by several rivers, low hills in the west, and broad mudflats in the north that adjoin the Thar (Great Indian) Desert.

The 2002 Gujarat Riots

Atleast 21 survivors of the 2002 Gujarat riots have filed a lawsuit against nationalist Hindu organizations, such as the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP is currently in power in Gujarat, and was the ruling party in India before the elections last year.

The lawsuit refers to an attack on a housing society in Gujarat's commercial capital, Ahmedabad, in which 39 people were killed.

One of those killed was a former Member of Parliament, Ehsan Jaffrey.

His widow is among 21 petitioners who have filed lawsuits...

Three years after the pogroms, no one has been brought to justice.
